Taranga

Video, soundscape

Taranga is collaborative work referencing a story of Taranga as a metaphor of kaitiakitanga, bonding and relationships with Tangaroa & Hinemoana. This work looks to explore the hopes, dreams and wishes of a mother. The stories, legends and Whakapapa of the great Māui began first and foremost with a woman. Taranga, the mother of Māui gave birth to her Pre-Mature babe and mistakenly thought he was still born. She wrapped him in the hair of her Top Knot and sent him to Tangaroa along with the hopes, dreams and wishes she had for him. Tā te manawa – Take a Breath Ranga Mai – Raise up, Pull up from the roots A play on the word Ta-Ranga. These are some of the thoughts I believe Taranga might have had while she was in labour pre-maturely. “Please breathe, Please live.”
